Easy homemade marshmallows are so delicious and simple to make.

The holidays are here, and you know what that means- endless cups of hot cocoa! It can get pretty cold and snowy where we are, so the kids are constantly requesting hot cocoa to warm them up after plenty of play time in the snow. I have many memories of drinking hot cocoa as a kid, and nothing is better on a cold day than a steaming cup of cocoa heaped full of marshmallows. I love making our cocoa from scratch so we know exactly what goes into it, but what about the marshmallows? We definitely have indulged in our fair share of store bought marshmallows because everything in moderation, but I knew there had to be a better option. That’s when I started making these easy homemade marshmallows from scratch. They are simple, delicious, and with only five ingredients, you can’t go wrong.

I initially thought making homemade marshmallows from scratch would be much more difficult, but the process couldn’t be any easier! Just requiring a few simple ingredients and sweetened with maple syrup, I feel much better about the nonstop requests for cocoa and marshmallows. Let me show you how it’s done,

Making the Marshmallows

What You’ll Need:

2/3 cup cold water

4 Tbsp gelatin

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/3 cup maple syrup

pinch of salt

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water and gelatin. Bring this mixture to a simmer then set aside.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the vanilla, syrup, and salt using the whisk attachment.
  3. Add in the gelatin mixture. Start your mixer on low so it doesn’t splash all over the place. Ask my kids why we know that you should do that. Slowly increase the mixer speed until you reach high speed.
  4. Whisk the mixture until it reaches soft peaks.
  5. Spread the mixture into a well greased baking dish so the marshmallows don’t stick. Put in the refrigerator until set. I usually wait about an hour.
  6. Remove the marshmallows from the pan and slice. Toss in powdered sugar or cornstarch to keep them from sticking to each other.

Oh! I have been wanting to try making homemade marshmallows for awhile now…quick question, do the marshmallows taste like maple or do you just taste the sweetness? – Jamie

Hi! I stuck mine in a zip bag and put them in the freezer just for long term storage. They have been fine so far.
